Older People Volunteer Befriender

Do you have a passion for justice and social inclusion?

Do you feel older people should be or are valued members of society?

Would you like to meet someone new this year whose life you can make a difference to?

If you answered YES to any or all of these questions, congratulations, you are the right person to volunteer with Levenshulme Good Neighbours to make a difference in the community.

Who we are:

Levenshulme Good Neighbours is a registered charity that works with volunteers to offer practical, social and emotional support to over 300 older people living in the Levenshulme area of Manchester.

We recruit volunteer befrienders from the local community who support older people in a wide range of social, emotional and practical ways. We offer activities, social events, days out and training opportunities to older people, so they can make the most of their time in ways that are meaningful to them. This might include: helping people with limited mobility get out into the community; visiting a housebound person or escorting people to a range of local community events, fun activities and necessary appointments that they would otherwise be unable to attend. We also offer a range of activities for older people and provide information and support.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with good judgement and self-awareness who has a passion for our cause and will support us to do our very best for the older people of Levenshulme.

Perhaps you're retired and looking for a local project to share your experience with, or maybe you've worked in the charity sector before. You can be an older person yourself, or any age and looking to get actively involved in a local charity. We are currently recruiting volunteer befrienders, to visit older people in the Levenshulme community. The role is perfect if you enjoy a good chat, are a good listener, and want to help improve the lives of older people in Manchester.

Volunteering is hugely rewarding, and our volunteers have a massive impact, helping people to feel like valued members of the community by offering friendship in a safe and supportive environment.

We're looking for volunteer befrienders who can offer 2-6 hours a week, preferably during the day.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

Tasks can include helping people with limited mobility get out into the community, helping older people get online, helping with odd jobs and errands, escorting older people to appointments, social events and activities, and visiting a housebound person.

Our volunteer befrienders support older people in a wide range of social, emotional and practical ways. These can include:

  • helping people with limited mobility get out into the community
  • helping older people get online
  • helping with odd jobs and errands
  • escorting older people to appointments, social events and activities
  • visiting a housebound person
  • having fun days out together

Most of our service users are aged between 65 and 93 years old, although we offer the service to anyone over 60 who would benefit from a befriender.

Our volunteers are carefully matched with older people who they visit regularly so a meaningful relationship can develop. We also have other volunteers that offer much needed occasional support, such as going with people to appointments they couldn't do on their own or running small errands for them.

If you have a passion for making a difference in the life of an older lonely person we hope to hear from you soon!

This is a volunteer role, but we do reimburse any travel expenses you may incur.
